Six gigawatts is enough power for roughly five million U.S. homes. Meta isn’t building data centers; Meta is building a private utility.

It is not alone, and that is the metatrend. BloombergNEF expects about 15 reactors to come online globally in 2026, adding nearly 12 gigawatts of nameplate capacity, with China’s Linglong One small modular reactor scheduled to begin commercial operation in the first half of the year — the world’s first commercial onshore SMR. Google’s purchase agreement with Kairos Power is targeting first SMR delivery in 2030. Carbon Credits’ 2026 outlook calls it “the year nuclear power reclaims relevance.” On the policy side, the Trump administration’s executive orders aim to push U.S. nuclear capacity from 100 GW to 400 GW by 2050, with the Department of Energy actively removing barriers to co-locating data centers with new generation.

The macro driver is the data-center electricity load, which the IEA now expects to roughly double by 2026 versus 2022, with AI training and inference taking the lion’s share of the increase. PJM, the interconnection covering 13 mid-Atlantic and midwestern states, is already saturated; ASCE notes interconnection queues running multiple years in regions where multi-gigawatt expansions are landing on top of grid infrastructure that planners assumed would handle modest demand growth. The result: power capacity has become the binding constraint on AI compute, not chips and not capital.

Three things flow from that for any CEO who isn’t running a hyperscaler — which is to say, almost everyone reading this.

First, your cost of compute will diverge. Companies that locked in long-dated power purchase agreements before mid-2026 are going to have a structural margin advantage on every AI-heavy workflow for the next decade. If your provider didn’t, you’ll feel it in token-cost inflation as early as 2027 contracts. Ask your cloud account team specifically about their 2027–2030 power contracting profile — not their 2026 list price. The list price will be optimistic; the renewal won’t be.

Second, the location of your AI workloads is becoming a strategic decision again, the same way data residency was a decade ago. Workloads are quietly migrating toward where the grid has headroom (interior west, parts of the south, certain Nordic and Middle East zones). If you have latency-sensitive use cases tied to specific U.S. metros where the grid is choked, you have a planning problem that doesn’t show up on any current dashboard.

Third — and this is the under-discussed one — your customers are about to face the same question. If you sell to manufacturers, retailers, or any company whose unit economics include electricity, they are now competing for grid capacity with hyperscalers. Power-rate spread between favored zones and constrained zones is already widening. That changes capex decisions, plant siting decisions, and ultimately who can afford to take on which workloads. If your product or pitch ignores that, you’re missing a real angle.

If you want a steady feed of signals like this — curated trend reporting written for CEOs and founders, not data scientists — bookmark TrendInsightsJournal.com. The metatrends — energy, AI compute, demographics, geopolitics, capital flows — only matter when they show up in your P&L, and that’s exactly when they’re hardest to spot in the noise. TrendInsightsJournal connects the dots weekly. Read the brief, run your week.

Energy moved from a back-office utility line to a board-level strategic input some time in the last 18 months — the SMR deals just made it visible. CEOs who treat power procurement with the same seriousness as cloud, talent, and capital will look prescient in three years. The rest will be paying retail.

Sources: TechCrunch (Meta nuclear deals, January 2026), BloombergNEF, Carbon Credits, IAEA, IEA, Deloitte (nuclear energy and data center growth), DataCenterDynamics, ASCE, Reason (“Next-Generation Nuclear,” February 2026), National Governors Association.

The Nuclear Land Grab Is On: Why 2026 Made Energy Procurement a CEO Job A quiet line in Meta’s January 2026 announcement deserves more attention than it got: the company signed deals with three different nuclear suppliers — Oklo, TerraPower, and Vistra — for more than 6 gigawatts of capacity.
