If your small business already runs even one AI agent \u2014 a Copilot inside Outlook, a customer-service bot on the website, a sales assistant in your CRM, or some workflow you wired up in Copilot Studio \u2014 Microsoft quietly made a decision for you on May 1, 2026. The company shipped Microsoft Agent 365 to general availability<\/strong>, and the simplest way to describe it is this: it\u2019s the manager of your AI agents. Not the agents themselves. The thing that watches what they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n

What Agent 365 actually is<\/h2>\n

Agent 365 is what Microsoft calls a control plane<\/strong> \u2014 a single layer that sits above<\/em> your AI agents, regardless of who built them, and gives IT and operations teams three things: observability<\/strong> (what is each agent doing, with what data, to whom), governance<\/strong> (which agents are approved, who can use them, what they\u2019re allowed to touch), and security<\/strong> (preventing rogue, hallucinating, or compromised agents from leaking data or taking unauthorized actions).<\/p>\n

Pricing: $15 per user per month<\/strong> as a standalone add-on, or bundled into the new Microsoft 365 E7 enterprise plan at $99 per user per month. It manages agents built on Microsoft platforms (Copilot Studio, Foundry, Microsoft 365 Copilot) and<\/strong> third-party agents \u2014 the same way Microsoft 365 already manages Microsoft and non-Microsoft email, files, and identities.<\/p>\n

For most small business owners, the relevant takeaway is not the architecture diagram. It\u2019s the fact that the \u201cagent governance layer\u201d \u2014 the thing analyst firms have been writing white papers about for two years \u2014 just became an off-the-shelf product line item.<\/p>\n

Why this matters even if you\u2019re a 5-person company<\/h2>\n

Two reasons agent governance suddenly matters at the SMB scale:<\/p>\n

1. Most small businesses already have more agents than they realize.<\/strong> If you use Microsoft 365 Copilot, you have Copilot. If you use HubSpot\u2019s Customer Agent or Prospecting Agent (HubSpot rolled out outcome-based pricing on those last month), you have those. If you use Intuit\u2019s QuickBooks Intelligence (announced in late April), you have those. If you use Salesforce Agentforce, you have that. Most owners have not done the audit. Agent 365 is what makes that audit possible without a consultant.<\/p>\n

2. The compliance wall is moving from \u201cfuture problem\u201d to \u201cthis year problem.\u201d<\/strong> The EU AI Act\u2019s general-purpose AI obligations land in August 2026. State-level rules in Colorado (delayed but still coming) and Texas are being built around documented agent oversight. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know what our AI was doing\u201d stops being a defense once products like Agent 365 exist for $15\/user\/month. Insurers and clients are going to start asking the question.<\/p>\n
